James Dunnell loves to collect antiques. So when his great aunt gave him some original sheet music published in 1911 by the Hauschild Music Company in Victoria, he was thrilled.

“I’m not a musician, but I’m very into antiques. They just have this quality about them. They made things to last back then,” the 23-year-old Victoria resident said.

Dunnell added that his great aunt had bought the “Oh, You Kid” Rag Two Step sheet music by composer H.F. Schubert at a resale shop and gave it to him when he was 12. His grandmother had been holding onto it for him for safe keeping until last week.

“I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it. I’m a little worried about it deteriorating,” he said. “It’s not in perfect shape, but it’s still a piece of history.”

The Hauschild Music Company was founded by George Hauschild in 1891 in Victoria. Initially, the company sold only musical instruments and accessories, but soon began publishing music. It was one of the two earliest music publishers in the state, with the other being Thomas Goggan and Brothers in Galveston, according to the Handbook of Texas .

The company was known for being committed to publishing composers from around the region and, according to the Texas Handbook, was the first publishing company in Texas to publish Mexican composers.

The company ended its publishing operations in 1922.
