HALLETTSVILLE – Haley Leopold had 16 digs and Kelly Hairell 13 kills as Hallettsville swept Memorial 26-24, 25-22, 26-24 on Tuesday. Tabby Zella picked up 13 assists, while Aubrey Flores had 12 digs for the Lady Vipers who even their record at 5-5 with the loss. Lou Barefield signed to play basketball at Beeville’s Coastal Bend Community College on Tuesday. Barefield, who averaged 11.2 points per game and 8.1 rebounds in his senior season at Memorial, reports to campus in a week. more >>

Season tickets for the Memorial Vipers football team are on sale through Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Memorial athletic office for the general public. GOLIAD - After back-to-back 2-8 seasons, the Goliad Tigers feel they are in position to compete for a playoff berth this season. “We feel very good about this team and where we are at right now,” Tigers coach Greg Althof said. “It’s a situation where a system is in place and we feel we have a core nucleus of kids that have been under us a couple of years now and understand what we are trying to do and the concepts behind our program.” more >>

St. Joseph nearly took an early exit from its own tournament Thursday. BLOOMINGTON – With two tires lifted above his head, senior running back Ricky Reyes ran laps after practice on Tuesday. Reyes, with a number of his teammates, was paying the price for missing a practice. The punishment, also known as “black haloes”, is not being looked at as a negative for the Bobcats, and isn’t above even a four-year varsity player. Instead, it’s a commitment builder and something new head coach Lonnie Goad thinks will bring the players together. more >>
Rome McNary has been hired as head softball coach and Tim Eaton will return as the boys head soccer coach at Memorial, according to Victoria school district athletic director Mickey Finley. McNary has been coaching softball at Western Texas College in Snyder the last five seasons, including the last two as head coach. He had an overall record of 59-54-1 and his teams finished third in the conference and qualified for the regional tournaments both years. more >>

VANDERBILT – Ryan Richter has his Thursday dinner plans set for the rest of the football season. He also knows who his date will be for those meals. Richter, a senior linebacker and running back for the Industrial Cobras, and his teammates are starting a new tradition of meeting to eat together before every game this season. He believes having team meals the day before games will strengthen the bond and could translate into more wins for the program. more >>
Memorial found the right combinations when it needed them Tuesday and opened the 2008 volleyball season with wins over Corpus Christi Moody and El Campo. The Lady Vipers opened with a 25-17, 19-25, 25-23, 25-11 win over Moody and then held off El Campo 17-25, 25-20, 25-17, 26-24. more >>
