Shiner back to defend St. Joseph title
advertising
Last year’s championship match up will not materialize in this year’s final at the annual St. Joseph Lady Flyers volleyball tournament.

Both finalist, Shiner and St. Joseph, could still meet as they are situated in the same side of the bracket as action gets under way today at the St. Joseph gym.

Faith Academy and Ganado begin the action at 8 a.m., while host St. Joseph will take on Cuero in an 11:45 a.m. contest.

A victory by St. Joseph could pit the Lady Flyers against defending champion Shiner in a 9:15 p.m. semifinal. Shiner would have to get past the Gonzales-Shiner St. Paul winner in order to advance to the semifinal.

Other teams in the tournament include Karnes City, Ingleside, and Hallettsville Sacred Heart

Shiner could easily be considered the favorite to defend its title with nine lettermen returning from its Class 1A regional finalist team from last year.

Seniors Ieisha Flowers and Alyssa Strauss, both all-tournament picks last year, return to lead the Lady Comanches along with seniors Amber Shimek and Shelby Bernshausen and juniors Caitlin Kalich and Amanda Hibbs.

Tournament action resumes Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the consolation final, with the championship game set for 3:30 p.m.
