Rome McNary has been hired as head softball coach and Tim Eaton will return as the boys head soccer coach at Memorial, according to Victoria school district athletic director Mickey Finley.

McNary has been coaching softball at Western Texas College in Snyder the last five seasons, including the last two as head coach. He had an overall record of 59-54-1 and his teams finished third in the conference and qualified for the regional tournaments both years.

McNary will replace Wayne Stewart, who resigned during the summer to accept a coaching position at Calhoun.

McNary played football for Finley on the 1993 Cuero team that reached the Class 3A state final and earned all-state honors as a defensive end, tight end and kicker.

“He’s the real deal on softball,” Finley said. “He has great experience. A lot of coaches from around the state have been calling him to get advice. He’s very knowledgeable in the sport and very well thought of.”

Eaton was the boys head soccer coach at Victoria High and Memorial for 15 seasons and compiled a 205-103-28 record. Eaton led the Vipers to three district titles and the regional final in 2002 before resigning after the 2004 season.

He returned to Memorial and served as the assistant coach last season under John Brown, who resigned during the summer to go into private business.

“He was familiar with the program,” Finley said. “He was successful for us here last year.”
