Barefield, who averaged 11.2 points per game and 8.1 rebounds in his senior season at Memorial, reports to campus in a week.
“I love the game and wanted to keep playing,” said Barefield who was a two-year starter at Memorial. “It’s going to help me better myself in life. They are pretty new so it’s a good opportunity for me to go there and make a name for myself. I want to keep playing after my two years, but if I can’t I can always use my education.”
Barefield played inside as the Vipers post and as a forward. At the college level, Barefield knows improvements need to be made in his game, but he’s willing to put in the work.
“I’m going to have to work on my outside game and my shooting,” he said. “I’m going to play small and power forward position.”
While he works on his shooting, one of his natural gifts has helped him throughout his career.
“He’s a really long player,” Memorial head coach John Grammer said. “Everyone always talks about wanting a player with long arms and can get his hands on a lot of balls.
“He improved offensively from his junior to senior year. He became a scoring threat for us that we used this year. He played a lot during the summer months and got more confident.”
Barefield plans on becoming a nurse when he completes school, and is excited about the opportunity Coastal Bend is offering.
“They offered free school,” Barefield said. “There’s no way that I’m not going to take it.”
