Genealogy classes at VC begin in August
BY MARTHA JONES
Attention seasoned genealogists who are busy tracing your family lineages: The Victoria College Continuing Education Department will offer Intermediate Genealogy 102 from 6 p.m. till 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday evenings beginning Aug. 18 and Aug. 19, through Sept. 8 and Sept. 9. The final session for both classes will be Friday, Sept. 10, a day-long research field trip to Austin's Texas State Archives and Texas General Land Office. Once again, I will be the instructor.
The five-week course offers an intermediate level of genealogical research ideas and suggestions with no written exams or grades. Enrollment for each class is limited to 25 graduates of this past January's Beginning Genealogy 101 class, or to well-experienced researchers who understand genealogy terminology and procedures. As course instructor, I will be assisted by friends from the Victoria County Genealogical Society, the Guadalupe Victoria Chapter DAR and Victoria Chapter SAR, who will offer students individualized instruction and suggestions for further genealogical research.
The sessions will include information on migration routes and maps, military records, census enumeration in which students will participate as enumerators, state and federal lands measurements and evaluation/interpretation of evidence. Students will have the opportunity to research county records in the Victoria County Courthouse (local field trip), review state archives and research state and federal lands (Austin field trip).
Certificates will be awarded to participants who complete the course. Students will receive suggestions for where and how to search for and obtain needed documents. In the final Friday session on Sept. 10, students will be introduced to resources available in the Texas State Archives and Texas General Land Office. Two field trips will be included in the course and students will need to make arrangements to attend both the local and Austin sessions.
For more information and to register for the course, phone 361-582-2528 before Aug. 17. Tuition is $95. Instructions for payment will be given when participants register for the class. All classes will meet in the Continuing Education Center, which faces Ben Jordan Street, near Victoria College Entrance No. 1.
