INEZ - Santiago Zarate is among the Lone Star State's newest millionaires.
The Edna resident won $1 million, the second top prize, in the Texas Lottery's $1,000,000 Gold Rush scratch-off game, according to a Texas Lottery Commission news release. He claimed his winnings at the Victoria lottery claim center.
Odds of winning the top prize were one in one million, according to the lottery website.
Zarate requested minimal publicity, according to the release, and calls to his home were unreturned.
He wasn't the only winner of the scratch-off game, however. Zarate purchased his ticket from Smitty's Food Mart, located at 9 FM 444 South in Inez, and the shop is eligible for a $10,000 retailer bonus.
Attempts by phone to reach the store owner for comment Friday afternoon were unsuccessful.
The $1,000,000 Gold Rush scratch-off game began in February and includes more than $44 million in prizes, according to the news release. One other $1 million prize remains unclaimed.
Odds of winning, including break-even prizes, are one in 2.60.
