Victoria College trustees say they expect enrollment numbers to increase this fall.

The announcement is noteworthy because the University of Houston-Victoria opens for the first time this fall as a four-year university. Some worried that Victoria College's enrollment would suffer if the university accepted freshman and sophomores.

Victoria College trustees said during a regular meeting on Monday that a plan to work with the university should bolster attendance at both schools.

"We're going to do every thing we can to help them grow because it will benefit us just as much as it will benefit them," said Patricia Vandervoort, a Victoria College vice president.

Part of that plan is for Victoria College to offer classes the university does not, thus requiring some freshman and sophomores to take classes at both schools - a process called co-enrollment.

The university will not offer remedial or art classes and Victoria College will, for example.

"We anticipate at least half of the new students will take one class at Victoria college," said Vandervoort.

If this spring is any indication, Victoria College's fall enrollment numbers appear bright.

Spring enrollment increased by 5 percent from the same period a year ago, trustees announced Monday. Enrollment statistics also show the college has more full-time than part-time students.

"There are also more students coming from in-district," said Larry Garrett, executive director for institutional planning and special projects at Victoria College.

In-district students call Victoria County home, Garrett noted.
