Prause

Editor's Note: Early voting begins Oct. 18 for the Nov 2. general election. To help our readers learn more about the candidates in the contested races, we will publish profiles on them. Today's profile is on candidates for DeWitt County Judge.

Name:Ben E. Prause

Age: 77

City/county of residence: Cuero, DeWitt County

Party Affiliation: Democrat

Occupation: DeWitt County Judge

Why do you want to serve in the office you are seeking?

I am seeking re-election because I feel the voters are pleased with the type of conservative leadership that has been provided by elected and appointed officials and by myself. I want to continue to be a part of this financially stable and well-governed political subdivision.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

The experience I have gained as county judge during the past nearly 24 years qualifies me to serve in this office. The annual continuing education requirements that a county judge must meet also play an important role in qualifying me for this office.

If elected, how will you go about serving your constituents?

The same way I have done in the past: continuing to be a conservative county judge who is available to all the citizens, regardless of political affiliation or economic standing.

Is there anything else you would like to discuss concerning your election?

I have spoken to many citizens during my campaign. I plan to meet with many others before the election.

Name: Daryl L. Fowler

Age: 54 (as of Sept. 29)

City/county of residence: Yoakum, DeWitt County

Party Affiliation: Republican

Occupation: Insurance / financial advisor and rancher

Why do you want to serve in the office you are seeking?

Simply put, DeWitt County is about to experience something it has never seen before due to exploration of the Eagle Ford Shale. It's apparent to me things are going to change dramatically, but few people are taking a long-term view. I don't see the coordination of effort that we need to manage the prosperity and the challenges that will come, so I am taking it to the voters. It's their first choice in 24 years.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

According to state law, the county judge is the chief budget officer and prepares the budget with the assistance of the county auditor. During my insurance career I taught agents and families how to budget, set financial goals and make contingency plans. It is my nature to look at a budget or a corporate financial statement, tear it apart and put it back together again. It's a great fit for what DeWitt County needs.

If elected, how will you go about serving your constituents?

The most valuable service I could render would be to prioritize the county budget and focus the spending on our greatest needs. Secondly, I want to foster a working relationship with the exploration companies so that we aren't left with a two-bit road system when the oil boom is over. Additionally, I will work with our state representatives on issues of concern to rural Texans because small population counties like DeWitt are under-represented in Austin.

Is there anything else you would like to discuss concerning your election?

I spoke with Judge Prause when I filed to run against him. He knows the race isn't personal because we agree on a number of issues, but the Eagle Ford Shale is a game changer for DeWitt County. It will require a great amount of effort and planning to manage the challenges. The next county judge won't be sitting on the bench all the time. He'll have to suit up and get in the game.
