A 29-year veteran is Victoria's new assistant fire chief.
The new assistant chief, James Dearman, began as a firefighter in Kingsville in August 1982. He joined the Victoria fire department Nov. 16, 1983.
Dearman served as an engineer for four years, a lieutenant for six years and he has been in his current role as captain for 15 years.
"It's going to be an exciting job for me - it's something different," Dearman said. "I am used to doing shift work every third day. Now I'll work five days a week."
He said the skills he learned working on the truck and from his years in management will aid him in his new role.
In this position, which is new to the Victoria Fire Department, Dearman will oversee managerial, operational and administrative functions for the fire and emergency medical services departments.
He will also serve as a liaison to emergency communications, the Office of Emergency Management, legal and human resources departments.
Dearman will assume his new role Monday.
"I've been riding on the trucks for a total of 29 years, and I've been in management for quite a while," Dearman said. "I think it's time to pass the torch."
