Zack Moya and Chad Kruse were rivals in high school, but have become teammates at the University of Houston-Victoria.
Moya and Kruse helped the Jaguars put together one of their best performances of the season in a 4-1 win over the University of Incarnate Word in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday night at Riverside Stadium.
The Crusaders (19-17) captured a 14-9 win in an ugly second game that featured 20 walks, seven wild pitches, three passed balls, three hit batters and three errors.
Moya, who graduated from New Braunfels High, left UHV (17-28) wondering what might have been as he took a no-hitter into the fourth inning and yielded only three hits and one unearned run in 5.2 innings.
"Not being able to get out there and do basically the performance we had today is kind of not only frustrating to myself but to the team," Moya said. "We could have easily had a lot more wins on the board, done a lot better and turned our season around."
Moya has battled health issues throughout his UHV career, but gave a glimpse of what's possible when he's healthy against Incarnate Word.
"I threw a lot of cutters and relied on my defense to do what they do everyday," he said. "They backed me up 100 percent. As I've been getting stronger, getting healthier, I can definitely command the baseball a lot better. That all starts with health. The stronger and healthier I am, the better I can throw it."
Kruse, who attended New Braunfels Canyon, assisted Moya with two hits, including a solo home run, and made two outstanding plays at third base.
"We knew that all year," Kruse said. "We had a lot of talent, we just never really consistently put it together.
"The chances of getting to California (for the AII tournament) are slim, but we still want to come out and play a good game."
Kruse played against Moya in high school and in select ball and wasn't surprised by his performance.
"He's been injured so he hasn't had his best stuff, but I know the first time he threw in Brownsville, he threw great and then he got injured," Kruse said. "He got tossed around a few times and he's hurt. This is kind of his first start where he's been healthy. That's a very good hitting team and they may have hit two balls hard the whole day. He pitched excellent."
Nick Huff relieved Moya with two outs in the sixth inning and earned his fourth save.
"I think a lot of it boils down to your start," Moya said. "How the pitchers start. How you start kind of depicts how the players play behind you. Fortunately, I was able to go out there and do well and the players behind me played excellently. We had way better at-bats, and we just went out collectively and did a great job."
The pitching for both teams left much to be desired in the second game.
Incarnate Word had 15 hits off six UHV pitchers. Wilson Reuter had a grand slam in the Crusaders' eight-run second inning and added a RBI triple in a three-run sixth.
The Jaguars scored their first six runs before Andrew Thibodeaux had a RBI single for their first hit. Four of UHV's five hits came in the final two innings.
UHV returns to Riverside Stadium for a single game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday at 5 p.m.
