Rec Room column: Summer is crammed full of fun
Late spring and the impending summer months are by far one of the busiest times of the year for the Victoria Parks and Recreation Department.
Schools and colleges are letting out for the summer break and parents are looking for things for their kids to do and things to do with their kids.
The Parks and Recreation staff is hard at work planning recreational, sports and leisure activities, not to mention an array of special events for the community and visitors to our wonderful city, alike.
Sports enthusiasts seeking a fun activity to participate in during the summer are encouraged to register for the adult summer kickball and softball leagues. Registration starts Monday and will continue through June 8. Cost to register is $300 per team. Teams may register in person at the Parks and Recreation Office, 476 McCright Drive, next to the Rose Garden in Riverside Park, or by calling 361-485-3200. Registration forms can be downloaded at playvictoriatx.com. Games begin June 18.
Summer evenings are perfect for street dances under the stars in beautiful downtown Victoria. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and your dancing shoes to the Silver Bullet Street Dance, sponsored by Hartman Distributing, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday at DeLeon Plaza. The Texas Rhythm Band is providing musical entertainment at this free event.
If you are looking for a unique place to eat lunch and listen to free live music, then you won't want to miss the next Tunes at Noon event this Friday. Bring your lunch, your friends, co-workers and family downtown to DeLeon Plaza and enjoy Texas Country music from noon to 1 p.m. by Ross Brunner.
Memorial Day is the official start of summer and kicks-off a season of fun at the Gary T. Moses Municipal Swimming Pool. The pool will be open from 1-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday during Memorial Day weekend, and the pool will be open all summerlong beginning June 6. Admission is $1.50 per person.
Don't forget that the pool is available to rent for private parties and functions. Rental fee is $200. Call 361-485-3200 to make your reservation.
There are many more fun events and activities planned for the summer months, including additional street dances, Tunes at Noon events, the annual Miller Lite Blastoff Fourth of July Fireworks display at Victoria Mall, a Kayak Clinic, Market Days and much more.
