Victoria early vote falls shy of 2008 record
Early vote totals can be the deciding factor to a candidate's election fate.
Such was the case in Victoria County's election results Tuesday.
Elections Administrator George Matthews said the totals Tuesday night were close to 2008's.
Of Victoria County's 29,090 voters who turned out for this election, more than half of those came during the two-week early voting period.
Matthews said 56 percent of the total registered voters cast a ballot. Early voting saw about 17,943 voters while Tuesday saw just over 11,147 voters.
"I was surprised we didn't make as many as we had four years ago," Matthews said.
In 2008, Victoria County had 53,298 registered voters. In 2012, it dipped to 51,492.
He said this year's early vote totals started strong, but came in under the previous presidential election's.
"By the second week, people were coming in and able to vote within 10 minutes," Matthews said. "I was hoping for 15,000 today, but we only voted about 11,000."
