Bras for Our Cause
Bras have been the center of attention in recent months for many people, but these bras aren't for wearing.
They are to raise awareness about breast cancer and to help raise money for area cancer patient services.
DeTar Healthcare Systems recently displayed 12 bras decorated by employees. Then employees and visitors voted on their favorite by donating money to the bras.
The themes ranged from tropical to humorous.
The bra named "Oh what a luv-a-ly bunch of 'Coconuts'," raised the most money with $298.96 in donations as of last week. So far, the DeTar bras have raised a total of $765.99 but they are still taking donations, said Judith Barefield, the hospital's marketing director.
The bras will be part of the American Cancer Society's third annual Pink Ribbon Event set for 6:30 - 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Spring Creek Place Event Center.
About 30 bras from around the community will be auctioned during the event, which is expected to attract bout 350 guests.
Organizers hope to raise about $25,000 from the event. All of the money raised will support local patient services in Victoria and the surrounding counties, said Anna-Melissa Cavazos, director of Distinguished Giving for the American Cancer Society.
Most of the bras will be sold by silent auction, but there will be a "fashion show" with a live auction for about 10 of the bras, where the bras will be modeled in a tasteful way.
Celebrities donating bras to the event include Fran Drescher, Larry King, Matt Bomer and Bum Phillips.
