Best Nursery: Devereux Gardens
Devereux Gardens has been a mainstay in the Crossroads community for at least 50 years as a mental health provider and vocational program.
Participants propagate or cut plants to create their own species that are sold on the wholesale side of the not-for-profit, which opened to the public in 2000. It's no wonder it was voted best nursery in the Advocate's 2013 Best of the Best contest.
What it's most famous for though is perhaps its perennials, which tend to withstand the humid South Texas weather more than its competitors. For example, it has more than 50 varieties of hibiscus and heirloom tomatoes.
Devereux Gardens is gearing up for an April weekend event they like to call "Spring Fling," which features quality craftsman and food specialists, said Lon Smith, the business development director and grower.
"It started five years ago," Smith said. "We may have a photographer alongside someone who does oil paintings alongside someone who makes crosses ... This is more celebrating the individual that is creating the work."
