Advocate Editorial Board opinion: Wear college T-shirt to help inspire others
What will you wear Friday? That seems like a common, innocuous question. But what if you had the chance to make a statement and support education just by what you wear?
Friday is GenTX Day, a day focused on celebrating Texas students and encouraging them to work toward higher education. According to Darin Kazmir, Victoria College marketing director, it is a community-based movement, and members of the community are welcome to join in the effort to inspire the current generation of students to work toward improving their lives by getting some kind of higher education.
We are excited to see our area educational entities working together to promote this cause in the next generation. The University of Houston-Victoria, Victoria College and the Victoria Independent School District are all encouraging their faculty, staff members and students to wear their favorite college T-shirts to promote higher education and send a message of support to students across our community.
Education is becoming more and more important in our society. In years past, residents could make an adequate living with only a high school diploma. Today, with advances in technology and a growing need for workers in industries that require more training, obtaining an education beyond high school is becoming increasingly necessary.
We must inspire the students of today and help them begin the process of planning for a successful future by reaching for the next step in education today. Choosing to wear a college T-shirt seems like such a little thing, but if our whole community comes together and provides living examples of what higher education can offer, we can give today's students a glimpse into what they could achieve if they are willing to reach for a better education.
We encourage members of the community on all levels to mark Friday on their calendars and remember to wear a college shirt as part of GenTX Day. You don't have to contribute a grand gesture to inspire members of the next generation to work toward a better life and education. On Friday, you can take part in a statewide effort to inspire the children who will be building our future by wearing a shirt and showing some school pride. You might give someone else the inspiration they need.
