The Daniel Braman Chapter Daughters of the American Colonists met for three interesting programs since beginning its 2012-13 year.
The first meeting for the fall was in September, Patriot's Day, at the Victoria College where Chapter Regent Martha Jones arranged for the video, "Election of 1800," to be beamed live from Colonial Williamsburg. Fellow patriotic organizations attending included Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy and Daughters of the Republic of Texas along with Sons of the American Revolution. This enlightening video prepared attendees for debates in the presidential election. Charles Spurlin, honored guest, provided additional remarks regarding the 1880 election's influence in American history.
In November, chapter members and guests met at The PumpHouse, when guest speaker, Mitzie Stewart, retired Victoria College librarian, gave an enlightening review of "Albion's Seed," a history of English settlement and migration in the American Colonies. Jan. 8 was a stormy day, but chapter members made their way to Cuero to the home of Margie Bell, chapter secretary. Guest presenter, Cuero Mayor Sara Post Meyer, gave an interesting and informative presentation of the history of the mayor's office in the American colonies and its duties and responsibilities as compared with those today.
Daniel Braman Chapter has 30 active members and two prospective members whose papers will be approved in Washington, D.C., by the national board in April. Members this year reported more than 2,500 volunteer hours for National Veterans Services and 1,845 miles traveled assisting veterans and soldiers. The chapter was very active in the Warrior's Weekend where veterans from across the nation came to Victoria, were honored with a field of American flags, a parade, and then escorted to Port O'Connor for a fishing weekend including a huge fish-fry.
The next meeting will be in April when a new slate of officers will be installed. Women interested in becoming a member should contact Martha Jones at email@example.com.
