Victoria baby shares birthday with British heir
While Kate's labor was long anticipated by friends and family, she arrived at the hospital early Monday morning with little fanfare.
Across the pond, a much different story was unfolding.
As Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton gave birth to royalty, Kate Compton, of Victoria, gave birth to little Scarlette Rose, a 7-pound 3-ounce princess in her eyes.
"We are playing pass the baby right now," Compton said. "She's got a set of lungs on her. When she's not happy, she'll let you know."
The Compton family first noticed their lives mirrored the monarchy's on April 29, 2011.
Middleton and Prince William got hitched on Compton's 33rd birthday.
"I always joked with people that they called me, and I gave them permission to get married on my birthday," Compton said, chuckling.
But the similarities did not stop there.
Compton announced to her family she was pregnant with her fourth child around the time the media got wind that Middleton was expecting her first.
And when her husband, Chris Compton, a Victoria software developer, flipped on the television moments after her water broke Monday, they again marveled at the coincidences.
"We just kind of laughed and said, 'No way. No way. Is this really happening?'" he said.
The Comptons never got wrapped up in the royal fervor but instead casually caught segments about the heir on Good Morning America. In a way, they are glad thousands of cameras are not at this moment trained on the window of their second-floor Citizens Medical Center hospital room.
"People can come and go as they wish," said Kate Compton, a now 35-year-old realtor. "They (Kate Middleton and Prince William) don't get that luxury. They have to have the pomp and circumstance. I bet it's draining when you don't feel like putting make up on and getting out in front of people."
Her husband agreed. He hopes little Scarlette grows up to be more like her 13-year-old sister Lillian Clair Compton, or Lilly for short. The two were named after flowers. Scarlette was also inspired by classic Gone with the Wind.
"She (Lily) is really humble," he said. "She likes to play baseball and go fishing with me, but she also loves straightening her hair and getting herself made up to look pretty for school."
The doting father cannot stop smiling.
"I've been nervous and excited," he said. "That feeling never grows old. You never get used to it."
