Advocate honored for general excellence in state contest
The Victoria Advocate won first place Saturday in general excellence in the 2013 Texas Better Newspaper Contest.
In winning the top honor in its circulation category, Texas Press Association judges said the Advocate had "knockout pages and local analysis" accompanied by "superb illustrations."
This year, 148 newspapers submitted 1,505 entries in the contest, which is broken down into 10 divisions in which newspapers compete against papers of similar circulation size.
The Advocate also placed first in page design, for which judges credited the newspaper for its "very creative and bold" presentation.
In sports coverage and for its sports photos, the paper earned third-place honors. Judges said, "You get a lot of information in your section in a nice readable way."
