City Corner: Follow city guidelines for brush, limbs pickup
I am planning to trim my trees and will need the limbs picked up. How do I arrange to have the limbs picked up by the city?
The goal of the city's limb ordinance is to keep Victoria attractive and reduce the number of complaints from neighbors about large piles of limbs being put at the curb for weeks on end. A recent change to the ordinance makes it easier to get your limbs picked up if you follow some simple steps.
The city code now states that brush and bulky items should not be placed by the curb for longer than 48 hours before the scheduled collection time. The easiest way to comply with the code is to call for a pickup appointment for your limbs before you trim your trees. This call will set a date for pickup and help callers avoid fines for putting limbs at the curb too early. The number to call is 361-485-3220.
Another suggestion before cutting your limbs is to check the collection schedule available on the city's website. Visit victoriatx.org/environmental/treelimbs.asp for a map of your residential area and then consult the quarterly collection schedule to find out when city crews will be in your area picking up limbs.
This will help prevent residents from having large bundles of limbs sitting out on their curb for extended amounts of time, which is against the city code.
Tree limbs are picked up on a quarterly schedule throughout the year. The city is divided into four areas. Each area gets picked up four times a year during three-week cycles. If you are "in cycle," meaning the trucks are scheduled to be in your area, you can call and schedule up to 6 cubic yards of brush (4 feet by 4 feet by 10 feet - about the dimensions of a large picnic table) for collection. This service is part of your monthly water bill, and residents are allowed four limb or brush pickups per year at no additional cost. If you are "in cycle" and your limb pickup is more than 6 yards, the only additional cost is the $1.50 per minute fee.
Customers will be assessed a service fee of $20 plus $1.50 per minute if your pickup is "out of cycle" or if you request more than four limb and brush pickups during the year. Most limb pickups take less than five minutes, which is much less expensive than hiring a company to dispose of the limbs.
Please remember that it is against the city code to leave brush and limbs by the curb outside of your designated pickup schedule or without first making a collection appointment. The city's code enforcement office will "tag" brush and limbs left at the curb for multiple days, and fines can be charged to violators. Residents will receive a letter giving them seven days to remove or discard the items. If you receive such a letter, call the city immediately (361-485-3220), and we will schedule a pickup, and you will be billed a pickup fee of $20 plus $1.50 per minute. If the items are not removed within the seven days, the city's Solid Waste Department will pick up the items, and residents will incur a service fee of $20, plus $1.50 per minute and a code enforcement administrative fee of $137 on their next water bill. How do I get my landscape brush picked up?
The city will collect up to three bundles of landscape brush securely tied with twine on regular trash collection days. Landscape brush includes tree trimmings, hedge clippings and similar material. The bundles must be less than 4 feet in length, less than 2 feet in diameter and weigh less than 50 pounds. If they will fit, you can also place twigs and yard waste in old trash cans, brown paper lawn bags or cardboard boxes by the curb, and they will be picked up on the same day as your regular trash pickup. Please remember to keep at least a 5-foot clearance from your trash or recycling carts.
If you have questions or need assistance, please call our Solid Waste Department at 361-485-3220 or the Environmental Services Department at 361-485-3230.
