Advanced Placement exams show success
Now that the spring break vacation is upon us, it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on some of the amazing initiatives our "leaders of change" have implemented this year. In the Victoria Independent School District, we are surrounded by exceptional leaders and "champions for our children" across our "612 Square Miles of Excellence." We believe leadership is about taking charge, taking responsibility and not seeing things as they are but how they should be. It has been said: "In the winds of change, we can find our true direction." In regard to our school district, this certainly holds true. Our leaders have increased our after school Homework Center hours, added free SAT prep courses in our Homework Center and provided transportation home for our students who participate in this extended hours program.
We are also covering the cost of every student's Advance Placement exam, which will ensure every student has the opportunity to take every AP exam and not be discouraged to excel due to a financial burden. We have previously paid for 1,543 freshman, sophomore and junior students to take the PSAT exam. Furthermore, each student taking the PSAT exam received an individualized evaluation of their results called AP Potential. This information assists our students with selecting Advanced Placement courses that align with their strengths. We are also proud to announce that more than 2,200 of our Advanced Placement or Pre-Advanced Placement students have completed their Texas Performance Standards Project. This is the largest group of students we have ever had, and we are extremely impressed with the level of talent our students displayed throughout their presentations.
As we move forward in closing out the school year, we will continue to design our educational strategies to support improved instruction, improved student performance and improved professional development opportunities. It has been said that "Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have 24 hours in a day." On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the entire VISD, thank you for your direction and leadership and for what you do to support the winds of change. We truly appreciate your excellence.
