UHV heading to Lubbock for NAIA tournament
The UHV softball team will open the NAIA National Championship tournament in Lubbock on Monday.
The Jaguars will be one of four conference champions battling over three days for the right to advance to the NAIA National Championships on May 24-30 in Columbus, Ga.
The Jaguars (29-20) and ranked No. 24 in the latest NAIA softball coaches poll, will enter the opening round tournament as the No. 2 seed after winning the Association of Independent Institutions softball title last Friday over LSU-Alexandria.
Host school Lubbock Christian (55-7) will be the No. 1 seed, while No. 23 Friends (Kan.) (41-7) will be the No. 3 seed and Northwood University (29-17) will be the No. 4 seed.
The Jaguars will open the tournament against Friends in a 1 p.m. contest on Monday, with Lubbock Christian and Northwood meeting in Game 2 at 4 p.m.
The winner's of the opening games will meet on Tuesday in an 11 a.m. matchup, while the losers from opening day will tangle at 2 p.m. The UHV-Lubbock Christian loser will then meet the Friends-Northwood winner in a 5 p.m. matchup.
The winner of the 5 p.m. matchup will then meet the UHV-Lubbock Christian loser in Wednesday's championship at 1 p.m. If a second game is needed to determine the champion, it will be played at 4 p.m.
Lubbock Christian enters the tournament as the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament champion, while Friends won the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament and Northwood captured the Red River Athletic Conference tournament.
Lubbock is one of 10 regional sites with the winners earning a berthing the 33rd NAIA National Softball Championships Tournament at South Commons Softball Complex.
