Fashion tips with Hali Z: Haili Z interviews Perth purse designer Jessica Bretich

Designer Spotlight Jessica Bratich

Handbag designer Jessica Bratich brought life to the runway at Perth Fashion Festival with white form fitting dresses by LJ Caplin and a pop of life through her handbags with embellished accessories on the bags, such as gold plates name branding the bags with the Jessica Bratich signature.

Jessica Bratich, hailing from Perth, Australia, gives us insight from how a handbag can complete an outfit, to her favorite clutch in her latest collection and to her favorite Aussie animal.

Do you think a handbag can make or break an outfit?

A handbag can definitely make or break your outfit. It can make a boring outfit interesting by adding color and dimension. Handbags can be used as an expression for those who aren't brave enough to be bold with clothes, a statement piece can add a bit of flavor to what you are wearing.

Did you always want to be a handbag designer?

No, I didn't. It's something that came about a little later for me. I was heavily focused on karate for most of my life, competing and teaching while studying a degree in communications and marketing. I briefly studied fashion and always had an interest in fashion and worked in retail and wholesale accessories for years. The idea specifically to design handbags came from never being able to find what I liked within my price point.

Which handbag from your latest collection is your favorite?

I love the heavily studded clutch, called the TQ. It is definitely a statement piece.

How do you find inspiration to create your designs?

I find inspiration from hardware and leather texture. I love looking at materials; just looking at them can send me off drawing up an idea for my latest design.

What artist are you currently listening to?

No one specifically. Running a business and having a 9-month-old doesn't leave me much time for that sort of thing, so I only really listen to the radio when I am driving.

What was your playlist for your runway at PFF?

Red Skin Noxe - industrial sounds from the 21st century, which my husband found for me, as I wanted something with an industrial kind of feel since the collection is called "Metal Works."

Are you from Perth?

I am from Perth. I love our beautiful beaches; just driving along the coast in summer you get the most amazing view. On another note, I love that being a smaller city there are lots of people always willing to help each other to succeed. We are always proud of the achievements of fellow Perth people.

What is your favorite Aussie animal?

The Quokka, which are found only in a few small colonies within Australia.

What do you recommend for visitors to do while in Perth?

A coastal drive for sure and even a venture down south to our Margaret River wineries.

Where do you see your label in the next couple of years?

To be stocked in boutiques all over Australia and also to start hitting the international market.
