Kellen Smith, who shot himself following a police chase through three counties Wednesday afternoon, died in a Houston hospital overnight.
Smith died Wednesday night at the Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute in Houston, said hospital spokeswoman Kathryn Klein.
Smith, 28, of Port O'Connor, fled from Port Lavaca Police about 5 p.m. Wednesday when a warrant was being served, said Port Lavaca Police Chief James Martinez.
Speeds during the chase at times exceeded 100 mph, said Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Trooper Gerald Bryant.
When Port Lavaca Police terminated the chase near the Jackson County line, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and the DPS picked it up.
Bryant said after Smith's tires were spiked and his vehicle stopped, he shot himself.
He was flown by helicopter to the Houston hospital.
The warrant for Smith was for a probation violation on an unauthorized absence from a correctional facility conviction, said Martinez.
An official ruling in Smith's death is pending with the Harris County Medical Examiners Office, said Bryant.
