Texas officials say layover mystery a homicide

A mysterious disappearance of an Alzheimer's patient during a layover at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport seven years ago became a homicide case Monday after an examination of skeletal remains found miles from the airfield.The Tarrant County medical examiner used DNA tests to identify the remains as 70-year-old Marjorie Dabney and ruled that her death was caused by a blow to the head, police said. more >>

Report: Illegal immigrants freed from Texas jail

Federal immigration officials let thousands of inmates in the nation's third-most populous county walk out of jail despite the suspects admitting they were in the U.S. illegally, a newspaper investigation found. More than 3,500 inmates told Harris County jailers they were in the country illegally over an eight-month period starting in June 2007, but records show Immigration and Customs Enforcement filed paperwork to detain only about a quarter of them. more >>

Let's Stand Together dishes up Thanksgiving meals for all

CUERO - Isabel Patton is passionate about keeping up the tradition started by her grandmother, Carrie Liendo Ruiz, of providing meals on Thanksgiving. This year will mark the 14th year since Ruiz began the program in 1994 to help those in the Cuero area who can't afford a holiday meal or would be alone on Thanksgiving. Her goal was that they would have a place to go to enjoy the traditional turkey, dressing and cranberry feast. more >>

A.J. Abrams scored 21 points, hitting five 3-pointers, and No. 7 Texas opened the season with a 68-38 win over Stetson on Friday night. Texas probe leads to crackdown on dogfighting ring

Law enforcement officials in Texas say they've cracked down on one of the nation's largest dogfighting operations. They filed charges against 55 people and seized more than 100 dogs. The Texas Department of Public Safety said Harris County fights would be staged weekly or twice a month at one of eight secluded sites. A death row inmate who allegedly threatened a legislator from a smuggled cell phone last month now has sent a letter threatening the same lawmaker, authorities said. Texas man executed; killed ex-girlfriend's sister

A man who went on a murderous rampage against the family of his ex-girlfriend was executed Wednesday after he apologized and asked his family to pray for him. George Whitaker III, who killed a 16-year-old girl and seriously wounded her mother and 5-year-old sister in 1994, was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m. CST, eight minutes after lethal drugs began flowing into his body. more >>
