UHV expansion: a must for the community

Editor, the Advocate: In response to the editorial addressing UHV's proposed expansion from to a 4-year institution, I could not agree more with the writer! Our community has an opportunity that we cannot afford to miss and we need to make our opinions known! For the sake of our children and the long-term growth of our community, please take a few moments to voice your positive support for this issue and encourage your friends and associates to do the same. more >>

Does TxDOT need all those engineers?

Editor, the Advocate: I read with great interest Advocate reporter Sonny Long’s article yesterday about TxDOT jobs. In spite of the demands that TxDOT be more open and honest with the public (taxpayers), they continue to be deliberately evasive. more >>

Animals depend on humans for their heaven

Editor, the Advocate: Many people wonder if there is a spiritual afterlife for animals in a peaceful heaven. The writers of the Bible did not mention it. They gave no explanation for supernatural spirits, apparitions or ghosts that can be seen, but they wrote about the Holy Spirit (Ghost) that cannot be seen. Part of the answer about animal spiritual afterlife may be in evidence of ghosts. A book, “Civil War Ghosts and Legends,” describes human and accompanying animal ghosts long after the war. more >>

Beatitudes reflect true happiness

Editor, the Advocate: There are an enormous number of quotes from the Bible in just about every area of thought. Whatever point is trying to be made, the biblical form seems attractive. more >>

Let’s worry about our children’s children

Editor, the Advocate: In response to W.E. White. (Aug. 13) Which were the last two presidents who had a surplus? Which were the last two presidents who had deficits so large that your grandchildren and their grandchildren will not be able to pay for them? So who will suffer? You feel so sorry for yourself; you don’t worry about future generations. Wake up! more >>

No taxpayer dollars should go to lawsuit

Editor, the Advocate: As a resident of Goliad County, it disturbs me that county leaders have spent more than $150,000 — taxpayer dollars — to fund a lawsuit against Uranium Energy Corporation (UEC) regarding a project that many residents either support or have no issue with. more >>

Symphony thanks supporters of camp

Editor, the Advocate: The Victoria Symphony wishes to express its gratitude to Rev. Burr Dobbins and Trinity Episcopal Church and Jay Foreman and Trinity Episcopal School for the gracious donation of their facility for our premiere KidsCamp this past month. The staff was terrific to work with and facilities were perfect for our needs. We also want to acknowledge Dr. Jim McFarland and First United Methodist Church’s loan of multiple rhythm instruments and Mike Petrisky and St. Joseph High School’s loan of an electric keyboard for the camp. Kudos to McDonalds for yummy treats and to the men of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity of Texas State University for donating their time as guest musicians. Back our men and women in the military

Editor, the Advocate: I always like the song by Tammy Wynette, “Stand By Your Man!” That is what the American people did in the war of 1898 to 1902. In that war the Muslims killed 4,234 U.S. soldiers and thousand and thousands of Filipino soldiers plus more than 200,000 Filipino civilians. It was a brutal war (the .45 pistol was developed because it could knock down a crazed terrorist high on dope). more >>

Get ready for school to start in a few weeks

Editor, the Advocate: Here’s hoping the Mission Valley Mustangs are having a terrific summer. With the start of August there are just a few weeks until school starts again. It’s time to make sure you are in a routine of some sort. For those of you who have been sleeping in for the past few months, start going to bed and getting up earlier so your body will be on school time. Also, be sure you are getting some outside playtime every day. Your body needs to acclimate to outside temperatures. Once school begins, you will be outside at least 45 minutes every day for P.E. Get your heart and muscles in shape by doing some vigorous physical activity daily. more >>

Red-light cameras are practical solution

Editor, the Advocate: It came as no surprise that there would be a “flurry of opposition” to the red-light cameras. In a community where many of the drivers think those red, octagon-shaped signs mean yield, any obstacle to their headlong rush to be somewhere is less than welcome. more >>

Family says thanks for support and care

Editor, the Advocate: The family of Melvin Holley would like to express its thanks to everyone who gave support and care to him during the last months of his life: his doctors, especially Dr. Robin Adams, the ICU staff at DeTar Hospital, including Tony and Angela, and the staff at the Citizens Healthplex. Special thanks to the Rev. Danny Reeves, the Rev. Cory Brand and the Ladies of the First Baptist Church of Edna. Thank you to Montie Callaway and to the American Legion Post 346 of Ganado for their special contributions to the funeral. We also appreciate the many friends, neighbors, and family members who supported us with prayers, food, visits, cards, and phone calls. more >>
