Beatitudes reflect true happiness

Editor, the Advocate:

There are an enormous number of quotes from the Bible in just about every area of thought. Whatever point is trying to be made, the biblical form seems attractive.

Applied to a few of the material ideas that smother us today, the following may help clarify some of them. The form (only) is that of the biblical definitions of the “blessed” or “happy” in the Eight Beatitudes which apply to Christ’s Kingdom:

1. Happy are the rich and powerful, for theirs is every good thing.

2. Happy are the mighty in their violence, for the world will be afraid of them.

3. Happy are the careless and the light-minded who think the world a carnival of riotous fun, for they shall laugh loud and long.

4. Happy are they who thirst after all they can get, for they shall spurn the rights of others.

5. Happy are they who ignore the woes of men, for they shall not be horrified.

6. Happy are the sensualists, for man is only a brute.

7. Happy are the troublemakers, for they shall be left to themselves.

8. Happy are they who reject all faith and virtue, for Satan will not bother them.
