A Family TraditionPhoto by: Jennifer Pohler
Twenty-five years ago, my dad sat with me at the old "Sea Wall" in Port O'Connor on Memorial Day Weekend for the annual Kids Fishing Tournament. He baited my line with shrimp and took off piggy perch for 4 solid hours. At the end of the day I went home with a shiny gold trophy and a smile that lasted for weeks. Here he is a quarter of a century later with my two year old son, Crosby, for a weekend in Port O'Connor. We forgot Crosby's new fishing pole at home that weekend. My dad went out and bought an over-priced Spiderman rod and reel just so Crosby could go fishing. Shortly after, Crosby had his first fish. A beauty of a piggy perch! You should have seen that boy smile and squeal with excitement. After 25 years, my dad is still baiting shrimp and taking off piggy perch, not to forget the occasional hard head! In my eyes and his grandson's eyes, that makes him pretty special!
