When I was in high school, our football teams were not known for their winning seasons, but our band was great and the cheerleaders were full of spirit.
Some people came to the games just to watch the band perform and then leave.
But in the stands for Angleton High School were die-hard Angleton Wildcat fans. They were there no matter the weather, the distance they had to travel, or the teams’ season record. Many were there even after their kids were long gone from high school.
In two short weeks, high school football kicks off for another season.
And those die-hard fans in Angleton, the Crossroads and all over Texas will be heading to the stadiums to cheer on and support their football teams, bands, drills teams and cheerleaders.
This year as part of the Advocate’s coverage of the Crossroads' football season, we plan to feature a school’s top fan each Friday.
This is the fan who is dressed in school colors all day long, not just at the games, who knows all the players by name, cheers them on in good plays and bad, and who is there supporting all the students who take part in the experience of Friday night football.
This fan’s voice is recognizable from above the roar of the crowd. Or maybe they have a signature celebratory response like blowing an air horn or clanging large cow bells or maybe even holding up a piece of fencing when the defense is on the field.
We want to know who is your team’s biggest fan and what makes them the best. Of course, we want to know how to reach them so we can do their story. So include in your nominaiton, their name and daytime phone number as well as your name and contact information.
Two of the few requirements are the fan must be still alive and must be planning to attend games this season.
We are looking for top fans for the public and private high schools in Victoria, Goliad, DeWitt, Lavaca, Jackson, Calhoun, Refugio, Wharton and Matagorda counties.
Send your nominations to email@example.com, put Biggest Fan in the subject line; by fax to 361-574-1220, attention Newsroom Biggest Fan; hand deliver it to the newsroom at 311 E. Constitution St.; or mail to the Victoria Advocate, attention Biggest Fan, P.O. Box 1518 Victoria, Texas 77901.
We look forward to getting your nominations soon so we can select who will be featured.
