This week (April 10-16) was National Volunteer Week, time to take a moment to acknowledge and thank those who give of themselves to help our area organizations complete their missions.

Countless dollars are saved, staff work hours redirected and other benefits realized because of the unselfishness of volunteers. And these volunteers come from all walks of life, all socio-economic backgrounds, all genders.

To borrow a quote, in part, from Martin Luther King Jr., "Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't even have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. ... You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love."

I polled some of the leaders of Victoria nonprofits to get their feelings about their volunteers and keywords from their comments included "amazing," "priceless," "committed," "doers," and "lifeblood."

That says it all.

Thanks again volunteers! If you'd like to join their ranks, contact your favorite charity, church group or school and see how you can help.
