On Sunday, there will be a gathering in downtown Victoria to honor those who have survived their battle with cancer and to also remember and recognize those who have lost that fight. The Guardians of The Ribbon - South Texas Chapter will be on hand for National Survivors Day from 4 to 7 p.m. at the corner of Forrest Street and Main Street i Victoria. The local pink fire truck will be on hand, too and survivors are invited to sign the truck. Families of loved ones who have been lost to cancer are also welcome to sign the truck. I am not sure if I will make it or not, since I will be at my mother's in Gonzales County and not sure what time I will return. But whether I am there in person or not, my sister Beth will be in my thoughts. She died from breast cancer 18 years ago at only 41. Beth was vibrant. A former majorette, beauty contest participant and a single mom, she normally bubbled with enthusiasm. Even in her darkest and final days, she was optimistic, telling me from the hospital that she was happy because she was going to get to see dad again. Our father had died the year before. So if you can Sunday, get out and celebrate survival and remember those who lost the fight. They can never stray from our thoughts. I miss my sister.
