A friend of mine in Austin does not believe in coincidences.

That said, I met Agnes Valigura, Port O’Connor’s 91-year-old former postmaster, while covering Poco Bueno in July. We visited during the fishing tournament and a few times afterwards during day trips that I made with members of my family.

After discussions about oysters and the old days, Agnes realized that her older brother, Clarence Munsch, graduated from St. Joseph High School around 1928 with my grandfather, Frederick Tyng. She even found a newspaper image of their graduating class where the two young men were seated a person apart in the front row.

I suppose our longtime community connections lessen the sense of coincidence, but finding a new friend with old ties was refreshing after a decade of anonymity in Austin.
