As the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks makes its approach, many organizations are taking in donations to support victims' families, visitors centers and more.

And, while it's great to give back, it's also important to play it safe.

The Better Business Bureau is urging people to do some research before donating money to charities.

Ask why the charity is still collecting for 9/11, for instance, and check it out with the IRS. The BBB also does national charity reviews, which can offer insight.

It's all good advice, and not just for Sept. 11. It pays to keep an eye on where your money's going, no matter what.
