Gayla Goff dives headlong into life.

A Victoria native, Goff is retired but hardly retiring. The winner of the Advocate's Steve Jobs headline writing contest, she stopped by this week to collect her prize -- a free lunch with the editor in the newspaper's cafeteria. (No, second prize wasn't two lunches with the editor.)

I felt like the contest winner as I got to hear about Goff's wonderful outlook on life. A passionate traveler and scuba diver, she told me about some of her trips. We laughed as she described how she set up a computer and Facebook account for her mother, who wanted to keep up with her kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren but wasn't comfortable using the term "cursor."

She shook her head at those who complained the Jobs headline -- "Apple loses core" -- wasn't reverent enough. She considered it a wonderful tribute to an amazing man.

One of Goff's favorite quotations on her Facebook page fits her perfectly:

"We don't stop playing because we grow old.

We grow old because we stop playing."
