I'll rely on Advocate sportswriter Mike Forman to provide the historic view, but the best tennis player from Victoria in recent memory has to be Colin Hoover.

I had the good fortune of watching him play Saturday during the semifinals of the Big 12 tennis tournament in College Station. Hoover is a senior co-caption for Texas A&M and won the Big 12 No. 3 singles title this year.

Using the same determination that carried him to the Texas 5A state championship in 2007 at Memorial High, Hoover roared back in the semifinals after losing the first set 6-1. Nothing much was going right for Hoover during that first set against his Bulgarian opponent playing for the University of Oklahoma.

However, Hoover completely turned around the match in the second set, winning 6-1. The third set tightened, but Hoover seemed in control the whole way, winning 6-4, and closing out the Aggies' lone victory in the semifinals.

I watched the match with several players from the Victoria West tennis team, including our two children. Nearby sat a small contingent from Victoria enjoying seeing our hometown star shine on such a big stage.

Division I tennis programs recruit around the world these days, so you don't find too many Americans on the teams. On this day, though, Victoria triumphed over Bulgaria.
