During the morning hours of July 4, Ruth Anne Killough, 62, was struck by a Dodge Ram truck. The retired teacher was on a morning walk and was hit by the vehicle after turning onto Morgan Street heading toward her home, as reported by The Cuero Record.
A young couple at the scene attempted to perform life-saving measures on Killough until EMS arrived and began treatment, according to witness reports. Due to the severity of the injuries sustained by Killough, EMS were unable to save her, Steve Ellis, Cuero Police Department chief, said in a statement to The Cuero Record.
The driver of the Dodge Ram truck remained on scene, Ellis said. He was treated by Cuero EMS and interviewed by an accident investigator. At the time of the accident, the driver showed no signs of impairment.

According to the driver, he did not see Killough crossing the road and made an attempt to stop prior to the collision. Officers were informed by a witness that the vehicle did not appear to be speeding or driving recklessly, as reported by The Cuero Record.
The driver of the vehicle received citations for non-moving violations. At this time, no other charges are expected to be filed.
Killough’s family has set up a GoFundMe donation site to raise funds for certain costs associated with the loss. Remaining funds will be put toward higher education scholarships for local students to honor her memory. The page has raised over $8,000.
“Ruth devoted the majority of her life to serving others through education,” according to the GoFundMe page. “We have felt the warmth of her former students and enjoy hearing their stories. She frequently told us stories of time spent with the many new friends she made through local groups playing dominoes or bingo. She always looked forward to being involved in the community.”
